The 25th Monthly Meeting of the Waseda Organization for Islamic Area Studies

The Waseda University Organization for Islamic Area Studies will hold its 25th monthly meeting on January 25th (Wed) 2012 at Waseda University.

This time, HAYASHI Reiko, a special lecturer at the University of Tokyo’s Center for Sustainable Urban Regeneration, will give a presentation on Islam and human development in sub-Saharan Africa. This event is open to the public, so we’re hoping for a big turnout.

Islam and Human Development in Sub-Saharan Africa: Looking at Population Indicators

HAYASHI Reiko (Special Lecturer, Univ. of Tokyo Center for Sustainable Urban Regeneration / Former Technical Advisor to the Senegal Ministry of Health)

Overview

One third of Africa’s sub-Saharan population is Muslim, around 250 million people. As the population is expected to continue growing rapidly, this Islamic community is by no means peripheral, but occupies an important position. This presentation will use data from recently completed population and health surveys (DHS, MICS) in sub-Saharan Africa to explore the relationship between population indicators, such as birth and mortality rates, and religion and other socio-cultural factors.
