Joint Research Center for Islamic Area Studies : Project to Reinforce Joint Research Centers in the Humanities and Social Sciences (MEXT)

The Waseda University Organization for Islamic Area Studies serves as the central administrative office for Japan's Islamic Area Studies network. From 2008 to 2012, this network participated in Japanese Ministry of Education funded projects, including the Project to Promote Joint Research Centers in the Humanities and Social Sciences (2008-2009), and the Project to Promote Joint Research Centers of Distinction (2009-2012).

In 2013, the organization was officially recognized by Japan's Ministry of Education as a center for joint research, which they refer to as a "Joint Usage / Research Center", for a term running through 2019.
