Joint Research Center for Islamic Area Studies : Project to Reinforce Joint Research Centers in the Humanities and Social Sciences (MEXT)

In addition to conducting its own research, the Waseda University Islamic Area Studies Center (WIAS) also serves as the central office for Japan's IAS joint research network. Under the auspices of a Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) program, WIAS oversees and synthesizes the work of the five research centers in the IAS network. WIAS also promotes joint research on solicited topics, taking a "history of ideas" approach in its Solicited Research Topic, and an archeological approach in its Center Reinforcement Project.

The Third Iraqi-Japanese International Symposium “History and Society seen through School Textbook” in Memory of Prof. SATO Tsugitaka

The Organization for Islamic Area Studies at Waseda University, and the Tokyo University of Foreign Studies will co-organize an international symposium titled “History and Society Seen through School Textbook”. This third Iraqi-Japanese international symposium will be held in memory of Professor Tsugitaka SATO, who passed away last year. Prof. SATO worked throughout his life to improve relations between Japan and Iraq, and between Japan and the Middle East. In the wake of the 2003 US invasion and occupation, the Iraqi people now face issues of recovery and reshaping their national identity. In this symposium, we will discuss how Japan, Iraq,Iran, and the Arab Gulf States created textbooks that reinforce their respective national identities. We will welcome Iraqi scholars from Bayt al-Hikma(the House of Wisdom), the Iraqi National Academy, and University of Baghdad. We hope many people will join us for this symposium and discussion.
