Monthly Meeting

In the 2009 academic year, the Waseda University Organization for Islamic Area Studies began holding regular meetings in the evenings on the fourth Wednesday of each month. Along with progress reports from each of the organization's member institutions, these monthly meetings feature reports from academic and non-academic experts, providing ample opportunity for exchange of ideas on Islamic Area Studies.

NIHU Program,Islamic Area Studies

WIAS will serve as Central Office in the Islamic Area Studies Program under the auspices of the National Institutes for the Humanities (NIHU), bringing together the network-based cooperative research projects of the five IAS Centers. Research at Waseda University will focus on the theme 'Islamic Knowledge and Civilization'.

The MEXT Project

In addition to conducting its own research, the Waseda University Islamic Area Studies Center (WIAS) also serves as the central office for Japan's IAS joint research network. Under the auspices of a Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) program, WIAS oversees and synthesizes the work of the five research centers in the IAS network. WIAS also promotes joint research on solicited topics, taking a "history of ideas" approach in its Solicited Research Topic, and an archeological approach in its Center Reinforcement Project.
